About Kris McGarvey

It's not what I do that matters...it's who I am through the eyes of Jesus.

A Letter to My Son

We moved you out today. So few belongings for a lifetime in one house. But I’m sure I’ll be finding a few things left behind – some by accident, some on purpose.

It has been an emotional roller coaster since you asked your special girl to join the Mrs. McGarvey ranks. New car shopping & purchase, a month-long illness with overnight hospital stay, working 3 jobs while apartment hunting, then finding and getting approved for the perfect place. All while still being faithful to your ministry commitments and of course, planning a May wedding. You’ve done some major adulting recently. I’m very proud of you.

But I’m pretty sure it’s only been a couple of days since I brought you home from the hospital. Wasn’t it just last week that we started homeschooling, learning to read and drum at the same time? So many memories in our little house on Thiher Drive.

My life goal and greatest mission was to raise my sons to be mighty warriors for the Kingdom of God. I spent most of your growing up years as a stay at home mom, encouraging you to pursue your dreams and develop your talents. We prayed together, discussed the Scriptures and memorized a few too. Your dad and I tried to model a marriage based on respect, love and service to one another. I loved watching you play sports and music – and still do (though your baseball days seem to be behind you). I always wanted to be available to listen and give advice when asked, though I’m pretty sure I gave it quite often without your request.

But today our relationship changes. No more glasses left on the coffee table or dirty clothes in the hamper. You are grown and out on your own – still my son, but no longer under my roof.

You are going to be a great husband and eventually, a wonderful father. Your dad and I have prepared you as best we could and now we leave you in God’s hands. We will always be there for you but today you are a man and I’m excited to see what tomorrow may bring. Now, where’s that Kleenex?

Be All There

It’s been a crazy hectic day. Items from my “to-do” list have been jumping off the page since I woke up this morning. I skipped my workout (probably not my best decision but I was sooo tired) and snuggled under my electric blanket for an extra hour. Then my wonderful husband made me a hot breakfast…and not warm milk on my cornflakes…a really hot breakfast of scrambled eggs filled with great veggies. He’s a keeper.

But the minute I hit the office doors, it’s been nuts. And as much as I try to multi-task to get more accomplished…less seems to be getting done. So on my 3-mile walk over lunch I came to a conclusion.

I need to be totally present in the moment.

Just today I’ve heard about a co-worker’s husband who has Stage 4 cancer, another co-worker dealing with aging relatives who are sucking every bit of joy out of her life, a long time friend who recently suffered a very debilitating stroke and a friend’s nephew battling through recovery from a heart transplant. Real deal troubles, all of them. They deserve my full attention…so they know they matter to me…so I can pray intelligently. I cannot obey God’s command to “encourage one another” when I’m only listening with a fraction of my attention and staring at my computer screen or smartphone with the rest.

Physically – I need to maintain eye contact with the person speaking to me. I need to show them that what they are telling me is important and worth my time. Mentally – I need to put aside my “gotta get this done right now” list and be all there. Emotionally – I need to empathize and show compassion and kindness.

I know. I know. This doesn’t help me get more off my “to-do” list.  I can’t be everything to everybody. But I can be somebody to someone who needs a shoulder, an ear or a smile. As a believer in Jesus, I’m called to spread His love to those around me. Can’t do it if I’m only partially present…gotta be all there.

be all there

Releasing Expectations

There are just some expectations worth holding on to. Like me, you probably have some expectations which are necessary for an orderly existence. We have expectations that people will follow the law, work for their wages, and treat others with decency. But I’m often disappointed by people who think of themselves first and end up putting others at risk. We’ve all been passed on the interstate by someone going way too fast for conditions, or had someone rudely butt into a line, or watched co-workers repeatedly show up late and leave early from their workplace. Usually this means additional rules made to punish all of us, due to the selfish actions of a few.

We need look no further than the current presidential campaign to see that our assumption of decent public speech and behavior is long gone; replaced with mud-slinging, tirades, and cursing. Candidates call each other horrible names that I wouldn’t allow on a playground, let alone in a public debate. But bullies will be bullies, no matter the venue.

releasing expectations

Every so often I make  the conscious and intentional decision to release my expectations of others. The actual definition of the word “expectation” is the act of looking forward or anticipating something. I have expectations of future happiness and prosperity, expectations of great health and long life. I have expectations that others will play by the rules, treating each other with kindness and concern, being generous in thought, word and deed. But sometimes, I have expectations of others that are often unrealistic so by letting go of them, I free that person to be who they are designed to be. My expectations can sometimes cause them to act in certain ways just to please me, instead of how they would naturally respond.  The act of letting go of my expectations can really be very freeing…emotionally, mentally, spiritually and even sometimes, physically.

So today, I release you from any expectation of certain attitudes and behavior and allow the Holy Spirit to be your teacher and guide.  My job is to love you and model what I believe. No more holding you emotionally hostage because you didn’t “measure up” to what I expect. My standards of decency and moral code come from the Word of God – and I hope yours do as well – but you’ll need to determine the appropriateness of your own actions…No more being the Holy Spirit in someone else’s life.

The Day After Super-Something Tuesday

17.-Encourage-sunset

Yes, I’m discouraged. Yes, I’m a trifle concerned about our country. Yes, I’m going to keep spreading my opinion about certain presidential candidates. But, no – it is not the end of the world. Because I know Someone who is bigger, stronger and tougher than The Donald. Someone who knows the beginning from the end, Someone who holds the affairs of all nations in the palm of His hand, Someone who isn’t concerned, worried or upset about Super Tuesday. A King who remains on the throne no matter the election results.

Today look away from the talk news channels, steer clear of newspapers touting fear and panic, avoid conversation streams on social media designed to raise your blood pressure.

Turn instead to a few favorite passages in God’s Word:

Romans 15:4 and 5 – For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.

2 Corinthians 13:11 – Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 and 14 – Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing….And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and distruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

Philemon 1:7 – Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

So today – when you feel low about yesterday’s political results (and most of you who read my stuff feel the same way I do) – turn to the One who knows how it’ll all turn out. Our job is not to worry or fret but to encourage and refresh each other. And pray. That’d be good.

Red Light, Green Light Is Not Just a Children’s Game

stoplight

I think I ran a red light last night.

Cedar Rapids has many intersections with special “red light cameras” to catch those who run through stoplights. At night, you can see the flash of the camera as it catches the culprit’s car/face/license plate. I’m assuming, if I was caught on camera, I’ll be receiving a friendly note in the mail with an invoice for a fine. My friend who was recently nabbed at the same intersection said the fine is $100. Yikes! There goes my clothing and eating out budget for a couple of months. By the way, my husband was with me and he wasn’t even outwardly upset. Just matter of fact – “You got caught.”

While mulling this over in my mind, I’ve determined a few things. Number one – I will not be pushing the limits of yellow lights anymore. Expensive lesson learned.

Number 2 – If the ticket comes, I’ll be paying it. May need a few more tutoring sessions, but I’m not going to fight it. A couple of Facebook friends thought I should contest the ticket (if it comes), but if I did the crime, then I should face the consequences. What kind of lesson am I sending to my kids and others if I try to “get out of” the punishment I deserve over some small technicality? It’s okay for me to run through a light, but no one else?

Number 3 – Upon further introspection, I am full of pride. I know – you’re pretty sure I’m overthinking this whole deal. But bear with me. If I follow a strict moral code (the Bible), which says there is a definite right and wrong, why should I think I’m “above the law?” If I saw someone else run through that red light, I’d complain about “no cops around when  you need them.” Let’s take this a bit further – I travel faster than the speed limit on the interstate most days. Why? Because I want to get where I’m going as fast as possible. But why do I think I can disregard the speed limit by 5-10 mph, yet judge someone else for going 5 mph more than me? Is my lawbreaking any less wrong than theirs? Where is the end to it all?

Recently I was part of a conversation with a small group of teenagers who were talking about what they would do if they knew they wouldn’t get caught. I was a little surprised, to be honest. They were not concerned about whether the act was “right” or “wrong,” but whether doing the deed was worth the potential consequences.

I’m not naive enough to think every issue in the world is black and white. In fact, there is more and more gray in my life all the time (pun intended), but my job isn’t to push the boundaries of right and wrong. If I’m complaining about the lack of moral character in someone else, then I better be prepared to live the character I want to see in others. And there is no sin judged worse in God’s eyes than any other.  Adultery runs right alongside gluttony…witchcraft next to gossip…murder the same as jealousy and envy.

So my “red light moment” has turned into a day of introspection and repentance. I’m sorry that my actions will cause me to lose some money but so thankful I didn’t cause an accident or injury to myself, my husband or some one else. My driving record may reflect my poor judgment, but I’m more concerned that my living record reflects God’s grace and mercy. Better get my brakes checked because there will be no red-light-running for me.

An Extra Day

february29

For those of you who whine about “never having enough time” or “there are just not enough hours in the day,” this particular Monday is just for you. An extra day. A day to get something done that you had at the bottom of your “to-do” list…or a day to have fun and do something you’ve put off, because you knew you’d be too guilty to indulge when so many other things and people are screaming for your attention.

I don’t understand space, and time, and planetary rotations so this Leap Day thing is way over my head. I’m not even interested in “googling” it. But I do know that, if given an extra day, I want to live it fully. So take a moment (not right now – read the rest of this first) and write down three things you’re going to do with your extra day.

Maybe you want to call someone from your past who you haven’t heard from in a while…an aunt or uncle who would love to chat with you, or a friend from high school is isn’t on Facebook. How about learning how to make yeast bread (I’ll taste test, if you need someone) or pancakes  from scratch (Side note: we bought this wonderful raspberry syrup from Aldi last week and now I think I want to make chocolate pancakes. Doesn’t that sound decadent and delicious? Yeah, I thought so too).

Maybe on this extra day, you want to pamper yourself and do a spa day or get a pedicure. Spring is right around the corner and that means open-toe sandals and flip flops. How about a massage? Yes. Please.

Maybe this would be a great day to get off-line (wait! Read the rest of this first!) – and go tech-free for 24 hours. It can be done. I remember as a child (when Abe Lincoln was president, I think) when we didn’t worry about who was saying what or being seen with who in any given moment. CNN, Facebook, Instagram, and Google weren’t even a twinkle in anyone’s eye. This extra day could be spent powering down with the electronics and powering up with mental and emotional energy.

How about spending today in the presence of God – take a walk outside, read completely through a shorter book of the Bible, study a characteristic of God, listen to some new worship music…The Lord loves to meet with you (no matter what day it is) and I promise, it will be the BEST extra day of your life!

Those are just a few spontaneous ideas about how to spend your extra 24 hours – I’d love to hear more from you!

Cinnamon Roll Breakfast Casserole

I made this wonderfully quick, easy and delicious breakfast casserole for our church’s post-service fellowship. Except we couldn’t wait so we dug into it during Sunday School. For those who asked, here’s the recipe:

2 T. Melted butter

2 cans Pillsbury refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing

4 eggs

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

2 t. Ground cinnamon

2 t. Vanilla

1 cup chopped pecans

1/4 cup maple syrup

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Pour melted butter into ungreased 13×9 inch glass baking dish. Separate both cans of dough into 16 rolls; set icing aside. Cut each roll into 8 pieces and place pieces over butter in dish.

In medium bowl, beat eggs. Beat in cream, cinnamon and vanilla until well-blended; gently pour over roll pieces.

Sprinkle with pecans; drizzle with maple syrup.

Bake 20-28 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, remove covers from icing; microwave on medium (50%) 10-15 seconds or until thin enough to drizzle. Drizzle icing over top.

Serves 12 (or just one person with a gallon of milk or pot of freshly brewed coffee).

Enjoy!

Marching into New Things

If you’ve followed me on any social media, you know I’ve recently embraced the concept of trying new things. I had a great weekend workshop about 2 years ago at which I discovered some amazing and some discouraging things about myself. I was getting older in my thinking, settling for the status quo and allowing tradition and fear keep me from experiencing all that life has for me. So I made a decision (that I make about every day) to embrace the journey of life, look for adventure and view each day as an opportunity to learn something new or make another friend. It has literally changed how I live my life. My husband calls it my “midlife crisis,” but in a good way.

Two years ago I started running seriously (or as seriously as I do anything) and found so much satisfication in making and attaining goals. Then I took a whole month to try a new thing every day. I created art for public display, I discovered places in my town that I’ve never been, ate foods I’d never been brave enough to try, and saw my normal surroundings with new eyes. What a blast!

So as February winds down, I’m putting together another list of new things I’m going to try in March. It’ll be the perfect time – more daylight and a new hopeful season. I got a head start today by attempting Zumba at my Curves. It was fun and awkward and tiring. I’m going to keep at it so I can actually follow the instructor’s arm and leg movements at the same time.

I am a follower of Christ and as such, I am a new creation. I will not allow fear keep me from my dreams or the adventures God has planned for me. Join me?

More Fruit, Please!

fruits1

I love food. I especially love fruit and vegetables. Since I changed my diet pretty dramatically about 3 years ago, I’ve eaten a quart-size ziploc bag of raw veggies at almost every weekday lunch. And I eat an apple every afternoon at 3. My favorites are crisp, sweet and juicy…mushy apples are horrible. When I get a mushy or dry apple, I feel as though my day is ending on a bad note.

I found an article on the internet giving the Top 10 Reasons to  Eat More Fruit & Vegetables:

10.  Fruit and vegetables add color, texture and appeal to your plate.

9.  Fruit & veggies are nutritious in any form – fresh, frozen, canned, dried & 100% juice.

8.  They provide fiber that helps fill you up and keeps your gut happy.

7.  Fruit & veggies are naturally low in calories.

6.  Eating plenty of this good stuff may help reduce the risk of some diseases (like heart disease, high blood pressure & some cancers).

5.  Fruit & vegetables are rich in vitamins & minerals (another plus on the staying healthy bandwagon).

4.  There are an infinite variety of both fruit & vegetables…always something new to try.

3.  They are nature’s treat – easy to grab for a snack any time of the day or night.

2.  In their raw form, those fruit & veggies are fun to eat! Some crunch and some squirt. Some you peel and some you don’t.

And the number one reason to eat more fruit and vegetables?

They are nutritious and delicious!

By the way, on Sunday I’m giving the kids’ sermon again and this time we’re going to talk about the fruit of the Spirit. According to Paul, who wrote a short letter to a church in Galatia, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Paul says this fruit is produced naturally because we are living according to the way the Holy Spirit wants us to live. Just as a fruit tree doesn’t have to struggle to produce its fruit, so we shouldn’t have to strain to produce the fruit of the Spirit…it’s just a natural by-product of godly, Spirit-led decisions. And when you produce good fruit like the list above, then people will notice. They will see the fruit in your life and want to be like you or at the very least, find out why you are the way you are! So, if you belong to the family of God, your fruit will be evident, and as appealing to others as a piece of delicious fruit is to me! Don’t be a mushy apple!

The Hungry Games

hungry-games-logo

My taste buds are excited about next week. The Hungry Games are coming to Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids Restaurant Week is March 1 – 6 and 29 area restaurants are going all out to draw us in and feed us great food, for a pretty inexpensive tab. Making it into a competition, participating restaurants are serving up special Hungry Games menus for lunch (only $10) and dinner ($25). They are hoping you’ll try more than one and then vote for your favorite. Check out the link to see all the restaurants and their offerings but, working downtown for the last 8 years has given me the opportunity to check out a lot of downtown eateries. So if you can’t decide where to start on your Hungry Games tour through food, I’ve compiled a Top 3 for various categories. I’m only listing those restaurants participating in Restaurant Week. Let the Games begin!

Top 3 Downtown Lunch Stops:

  1.  Need Pizza – so good that when my college kid comes home, it’s where he wants to go. They make your pizza any way you like it…truly.
  2. Rock Bar American Grill – great hamburgers, great price. FYI – The mechanical bull doesn’t run at lunch.
  3. The Lost Cuban – I’ve only been here once but really, really liked it. If the number of Rockwell engineer-types eating there is any indication, I’m not the only one.

Top 3 Outside of Downtown:

  1. Winifred’s – a special place to eat with special people. I have wonderful memories of my last time in the purple building along First Avenue. It’ll probably always be #1.
  2. Zeppelin’s – very good, very busy.
  3. Emil’s Hideaway – you’ve got to look for this one. It’s hidden behind the Taco John’s on First Avenue across from Lindale Mall, but it’s worth the search.

Downtown Top 3 I’m going to try (if not next week, sometime soon):

  1. Daisy’s Garage & Filling Station – ok, not right downtown, but I’ve been intrigued with this new restaurant since it opened last summer. The front door is a garage door which stays open on good weather days (which won’t happen here for about 4 more months). The menu is my draw: Steam pots, oil can burger, and Guinness shrimp.
  2. Popoli’s – more expensive and only open for dinner so it’ll have to be a “date night” try.
  3. Sauce – one of the many new restaurants in Czech Village. Located in a building slated for demolition after the 2008 flood, it was lovingly restored by the owners. I enjoy supporting local chefs who use as many local providers as possible.

I’ve personally eaten at 13 of the 29 restaurants participating in The Hungry Games so I have quite a few yet to sample. Probably won’t happen in one week but since eating is one of my favorite pastimes, I’m looking forward to a fun summer. Better get back to running!
